General Terms

Contractor: a qualified person responsible for the project contracted for. Certified Contractor: any contractor who has a certificate of competency issued by the department and can contract in any jurisdiction of the state without being required to complete that jurisdiction’s competency requirements. Their designated occupation code begins with a “C”.

Registered Contractor: any contractor who has fulfilled the competency requirements for the jurisdiction where they had registered with the department pursuant. These contractors can only contract in such jurisdictions. Their designated occupation code begins with an “R”

“Swimming Pool Specialty” Contractor: A subcontractor who has a limited scope of work relating to their specific specialty license.

General Contractor

CG and RG – A contractor who has an unlimited type of work for the services they do. 

Building Contractor

CB and RB – A contractor whose services are limited to the construction of commercial buildings and single-dwelling or multiple-dwelling residential buildings; all of which can’t exceed three stories in height. This can also include remodeling, repair, or improvement of any size building so long as the work does not affect the structural elements of the building. The contractor can also construct “accessory use structures”, garages, guest houses, garden sheds, or other outbuildings, in connection with these buildings.  

Residential Contractor

CR and RR – A contractor whose services are limited to construction, remodeling, repair, or the improvement of one-family, two-family, or three-family residences that are not over two stories, and “accessory use structures”, garages, guest homes, garden sheds, or other outbuildings, in connection with these buildings.

Sheet Metal Contractor

A contractor whose services are unlimited in the sheet metal trade and who has the necessary skill and experience for the manufacture, fabrication, assembling, handling, erection, installation, dismantling, conditioning, adjustment, insulation, alteration, repair, servicing, or design of ferrous or nonferrous metal work of U.S. No. 10 gauge or its equivalent or lighter gauge. CC and RC – A contractor who can perform unlimited services in the roofing trade. Class A Air-Conditioning Contractor

CA and RA – A contractor who can do any service that requires the installation, maintenance, repair, fabrication, alteration, extension, or design of central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems; as well as duct work in connection with a complete system but with the limitation that the work performed is necessary to complete an air-distribution system, boiler, and unfired pressure vessel systems, and all appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection with them. The following work is not permitted for this contractor type: liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring.

Class B Air-Conditioning Contractor

CA and RA – A contractor whose services are limited to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU of heating in any one system in contracts that require the skill to install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system. The following work is not allowed: liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring. 

Mechanical Contractor

CM and RM – a contractor whose services are unlimited in the execution of contracts that require the skill to install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system. The following work is not allowed under this classification: potable water lines or connections, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring.
